Computer counterfeiters shift to desktop methods in currency fraud
Counterfeit incidents rise as computer generated fakes grow from 0.5 percent of all forgeries in 1995 to 47 percent last year. Total counterfeit currency in circulation climbs from 32 million to 39 million amid easier access to desktop publishing. Experts urge authentication by comparing notes and testing ink with water to spot fakes.

Hostage situation ends with suspect surrender at Crestview nursing home
Negotiations with a man identified as Hays continued but officers could not see him. He spoke only to say he was fine and later handed over a gun as he walked out with police. A woman described as a mother figure arrived before the surrender and spoke to him after he came out. Six HEAT units assisted at the nursing home during the standoff, the first hostage incident for the unit in three years. Hays has a 12 year criminal record including burglary sexual abuse assaulting an officer and drunken driving. Residents expressed relief as Crestview's crisis concluded peacefully.
