Bachman building through Cedar Rapids history in 1893 to 1931
The two story Bachman Mittvalsky building at First Street and Third Avenue SE held a grocery saloon and a dress shop on the upper floor. A July 1893 windstorm damaged the roof and tin debris scattered to nearby structures. Henry Bachman rebuilt in 1912 as a sample room and later sold in 1913, with a 1919 sale to Corn Belt Savings Bank forming a cosmopolitan bank in 1920. The bank closed in 1931 amid the Great Depression, shortly before the Honolulu Conservatory of Music opened nearby in 1930.
