Iowan finds Stelzner cello legacy from 1890s Germany

North Liberty professor James Christensen, former internal medicine professor at the University of Iowa, has become a leading expert on Stelzner instruments. He found a Stelzner cello in Denmark and traced the maker's history, noting the piano violin music designer built 330 instruments, created the violetta and cellone, and died by suicide in 1906 after Stelzner’s Dresden factory failed. Christensen photographed, measured, and cataloged Stelzner pieces in museums, reported results in The Strad, and plans to donate instruments to the University of South Dakota museum after further study.
