Iowa Ten Commandments Display Passes Muster at Capitol
The Iowa Civil Liberties Union says a Capitol display including the Ten Commandments is not an issue since it sits in a rarely viewed gallery behind the House chambers. ICLU executive director Ben Stone notes the exhibit also features the Magna Carta, the Declaration of Independence, and the Bill of Rights and calls any dispute an internal matter for lawmakers. He says the group stays vigilant on First Amendment religion clauses while expressing surprise at public visibility. Stone also says he spoke with House Speaker Chris Rants to apologize for remarks made after the display's debut.
