Iowa Guard units may be headed for SW Asia

Iowa Army National Guard infantry from Dubuque and Denison were told they might deploy to southwest Asia to support U S troops enforcing the Iraqi no fly zones under United Nations operations. Companies A and C, 1st Battalion 133rd Infantry and 1st Battalion 168th Infantry, were notified for training and possible participation, but officials said they may not be ordered to federal active duty and no mobilizations have begun. Col. Robert King noted past notifications without activation and suggested any next step would be an alert signaling potential mobilization, likely later this fall.

Leach sees foreign policy revival after 2000 election

U S Representative Jim Leach told Cedar Rapids Rotary that foreign policy issues may be revived with a new president. He cited the nuclear test ban treaty and fast track authority for trade talks as likely to gain support under a future administration. He argued Republicans unfairly oppose the test ban and said restoring fast track would strengthen U S bargaining in the next global round addressing subsidies, intellectual property, and non tariff barriers.
