Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack unveiled a nearly $4.9 billion fiscal 2001 package funding education with $45 million more in basic aid and $100 million for school repairs, health expansions largely for children, environmental and public safety increases, and a plan to cut about $30 million from the current budget while avoiding new taxes.

Postal Service proposes penny rate hike in 2001

The Postal Service outlined proposals to raise first class cards to 21 cents and letters to 34 cents with overall average increases near six percent. Magazines and catalogs would rise about 15 and 14 percent respectively, while hearings will be held by the Postal Rate Commission before any changes take effect in 2001.
