James C. Demmel, 27, of 627 Third Avenue SW, was arrested by police early Sunday on a concealed weapon charge. A .357 revolver was found in a car back seat and a knife with an illegal blade was confiscated. Demmel is jailed in Linn county on $2,500 bond and has until 2 p.m. Monday to move or plead.
Officer W. J. Newt Holland of Johnson County Sheriff’s Office reports a theft in Cedar Rapids during Sunday church service at Immaculate Conception. A car battery was stolen from his vehicle, totaling 42.66 dollars, an act he finds particularly irksome while he was inside the church.
The court rejected a Mississippi parent’s challenge to a tax exempt status revocation for white academies lacking non discriminatory policies. It sent back a question on whether non English speaking voters in 19 states may be forced to use English in registration. Justices agreed to hear a Ya kima county farm workers case but ruled against literacy tests. The court will decide if customs inspectors can strip search for narcotics in a heroin case. It denied a Santa Barbara oil spill victims’ bid to stop further drillings.
Six Iowa City area eighth grade basketball players and their parents sue the Iowa City Community School District and Danny and Geraldine McGrevey along with John W Miller for 161000 plus dollars. Plaintiffs allege bus overcapacity forced players to ride in a Miller car during a trip to Pleasant Valley junior high and that Miller and McGrevey were negligent in the return crash on Interstate 80 in Scott County. Names include Frank Gilliam Earl Riley Richard Schultz Jack Schrader Delos Eggers and David Crew with specified damage amounts.
Libbie J. Cernin 80 of 2030 First avenue NE Cedar Rapids died suddenly Saturday. Born December 11 1890 near Vining she lived in Toledo 38 years before moving to Cedar Rapids in 1969. Survived by daughter Mrs. John W. Harbit and son John W. Cernin both of Cedar Rapids two brothers Frank and Joseph Strachota of Cedar Rapids and two grandchildren. Memorial services at Hrabak's Funeral Home Belle Plaine Tuesday 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Hall. Burial at National Cemetery near Vining. Friends may call at Hrabak's after 1 p.m. Monday.
Mrs Harold Paulsen Bessie Irene King Paulsen 64 of 1397 Laverue NE Cedar Rapids died Saturday after a sudden illness. Born Oct 9 1907 in Shellsburg she married Dec 19 1959 at Cedar Rapids. She taught weaving at Jane Boyd community house and was active in Calvin Sinclair Presbyterian church Queens of The West lodge and Eagles auxiliary. Surviving are her husband a daughter a stepdaughter a stepson six grandchildren a sister five brothers and more. Service Turner chapel east 3 p.m. Tuesday conducted by Rev Earl A Huebner burial Cedar Memorial call up to 2 30 p.m. Tuesday. Casket not opened after service.

St Luke's hospital in Cedar Rapids outlines multi phase expansion to move key departments including emergency outpatient pathology and radiology to a future west center. Plans call for vacating Tenth Street NE north of A Avenue and building two phased additions totaling about 15 000 square feet per floor with 18 story final height and 600 more beds.
A rural Marion woman remained hospitalized Sunday after a car-truck collision that injured eight. Mrs. John Boyles, 48, in fair condition with internal injuries, rode as a truck passenger driven by her husband. Edwin E. Barrow of rural Cedar Rapids also injured. others in both vehicles treated and released. Boyles charged with driving left of center.
Two breakins were reported Monday at area implement firms. Merchandise valued at 300 dollars vanished from Schmidt Implement in Ft Atkinson in the second breakin in a month. At Balik Implement in Spillville burglars blew a safe and stole 300 dollars in cash.
Estimates suggest total draft calls may range from 80,000 to 120,000 as carryovers from 1969 reduce the 1971 pool. Tarr notes the peak call would likely hit early in the year, with a possible upper limit near 195, then easing as the year progresses and many below 195 avoid deployment by year end.
Iowa Selective Service Director Glenn Bowles announced that the first priority 1971 group with lottery numbers 100 and below will be eligible for induction in January to fill the state call of 338 men. He said the 100 ceiling will remain for several months and detailed the composition of the 1971 priority group and the extended priority group born 1945 through 1950. Bowles noted the 1970 peak number reached was 190 and that some local boards did not exhaust that limit in 1970’s inductions.

Linn County grand jury returns 13 indictments including manslaughter charge against 24 year old John E. Humphrey over the Nov 13 shooting death of his wife Elizabeth at their Mt. Vernon home. Also charged are Richard W. Joss and William Alan Jordan in rape cases, with several others charged or cleared in various offenses.
Balloting in several precincts ranged from light to unexpectedly high with totals such as 74 votes by 2 p.m. in the 16th precinct and 171 votes in the 25th. The 27th precinct reported 131 votes, described as light yet heavy for this election.

Arthur R. Russell, 51, of Oskaloosa, stood trial in Linn District Court on a robbery with aggravation charge for the Aug 12 Casino tavern holdup in west Cedar Rapids. About $100 was taken at gunpoint, jurors seated by Judge William Eads included Edna Mae Kint and others from Cedar Rapids, Marion, Fairfax, Hiawatha and Ely with alternates Clarence L. Bird and Marvin L. White.
Leo R. Johnson, 29, of 213 Third Street NE, was arrested early Sunday and charged with assault and battery in a disturbance at the La Cantina tavern on Cedar Rapids west edge. Special Deputy Leonard Booth filed the charge after Johnson struck him with a fist to the face and head when his hat was removed following a house rule. Johnson was released on $110 bond.
