Rome AP reports Italy will arm 10 to 14 year old Balilla Basila Musketeers with muskets honoring fallen World War soldiers. Each boy receives a musket bearing a specific fallen fighter’s name as the Balilla organization grows to 800,000 members amid Italy’s 650,000 war dead.
Malcolm Muir, head of the NRA code division since its start, resigns to devote himself to being president of McGraw-Hill Publishing in New York. Hugh Johnson faces the loss of a key aide as the NRA reorganizes its code division from Washington.
Walter J. Cummings, head of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, was chosen as chairman of the board of the Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust Co. Walter F. Brown former postmaster general under Hoover may be summoned to testify on burning of post office records just before March 4. James Maher testified he burned files including air mail contract material. Evidence includes noncompetitive contracting and alleged discrimination against independent airlines in 1930s air routes.
Washington calls for a three year extension of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation and authorization of one billion dollars in debentures. Representative Burns says the house may pass the bill by Wednesday as RFC loaning authority expires January 22. The plan would let the President halt lending any time and may limit debentures to five hundred million unless further funds are approved. The funds would aid banks railroads and other institutions with rail obligations due next year.
President Roosevelt focused on drafting congressional messages to urge immediate consideration of the St. Lawrence waterways pact and a federal guarantee of the 2 billion farm credit bonds. He may also propose a government corporation to manage refinancing of farm mortgages and later discuss guaranteeing home loan bonds.

Des Moines ap The town senate Tuesday voted 28 to 19 to apply the 2 percent retail sales tax to gas electric water transportation and communication services. The amendment completes action on the interim committee tax bill which also includes personal net income and net corporate taxes. The senate then passed a House bill for state cooperation with the federal government to maintain public employment agencies in fifteen towns with a $32 130 state share.
