Blowing and drifting snow returns to northeastern Iowa Friday night causing school cancellations for make up classes. Only Valley at Clermont kept Saturday classes. West Central Maynard Fayette Community and Allison Bristow closed. An inch of snow fell in many northeast sections with poor visibility. Overnight lows ranged from 15 to 24 across the state, with Cedar Rapids at 21. Snow expected Saturday night mainly in northeastern counties as a colder trend continues Sunday with highs in the teens and 20s.
Optimist International President Charles C Campbell urged drawing young people into civic clubs during a Cedar Rapids visit. He noted 18 year olds vote in many areas and stressed member involvement. Campbell said the Optimists charter about 250 new clubs yearly, though some charters are revoked. He planned to speak at a Roosevelt hotel dinner in Des Moines at 6:30 p.m.
The 600 foot vessel built in 1952 caught fire 450 miles south of San Juan as passengers in small boats were rescued. Coast Guard planes located the ship after SOS signals at 4 22 p m. Eight minutes later an abandoning ship order followed. The ship had been en route from La Guaira to Barbados on a nine day cruise.
Judy G. Tucker, 25, of 1237 Third avenue SE, was arrested Friday for larceny after renting a $300 painting from the Cedar Rapids Art Center on June 18 under an assumed name. She posted $1,500 bond and was released. The painting, rented for $7, was recovered at her arrest and not returned.
A bus carrying plantation workers plunged down an embankment near Bangkok on Friday, killing 19 and wounding 30. Police and rescuers worked at the scene as investigators reviewed the cause and passenger lists.

Allen Meier’s garage burglary with two chainsaws and a battery charger totaling $120. Randy Feaker’s car break in at Town and Country lot with a tape player and tape valued at $105. Fire damaged the second floor of the Sarah Marten residence at 1215 Fourth Street SE on Saturday morning. Officials said a 10-year-old girl playing with matches started the blaze, confined to the second floor with water damage. Mrs Marten and five children escaped unharmed. The fire began at 11 12 a.m.
Ronda E Weatherwax age 18 of 1011 Sixth Street SE and a 16 year old girl were arrested Saturday at Armstrongs for grand larceny. They allegedly stole $211 a checkbook and a savings account book from a purse belonging to Susan Dows of Mt Vernon in a fitting room of a women's apparel department at about 1130 a.m. The girls are being held Saturday afternoon. The money and other items were recovered.
AP reports several young leftists attempted to storm the U S embassy in Tokyo on Saturday. Police halted the intrusion at the gate and four protesters were arrested.
A 40-year-old woman in Buckholts apparently had a heart attack while feeding her 6-month-old daughter. She fell onto the child, crushing its chest. both died. Justice of the Peace Jesse Brock identified the victims as Mrs. E. E. McCormick and Jane, age six months. A 4-year-old was at home. an older daughter was visiting grandparents.
Jin and Nancy Pearsall and other defendants from Spencer Dyersville and nearby towns face postponed hearings as district court investigates legal technicalities of a large mass trial. Judge Thornton questions city prosecutions on state property campus offenses, suggesting state should handle such cases. Local attorneys warn remarks could undermine the remaining defendants without more evidence of malicious conduct.

Eugene Harvey Warren of 519 Fourth Avenue SE Cedar Rapids died Saturday after a long illness. He was born March 3, 1894 in Muscatine and was a member of Bethel AME Church. No immediate survivors. Services at Turner Chapel East at 3 p.m. Monday with the Rev. John J. Thomas. Burial at Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at Turner East after noon Sunday until 2:30 p.m. Monday. The casket will not be opened after the service.
Cedar Rapids resident Thomas C Yarnall died Thursday in Birmingham Michigan. Services are Monday at 10 30 a m at St James Episcopal Church Birmingham.
Democratic candidate Cloyd Robinson charged Gov Ray’s tax plan would hit weekly wage earners hardest and misses corporate tax loopholes. Speaking at a coffee at Mrs Rienhold Schamberger’s home he urged closing loopholes before raising income tax. He urged basing corporate tax on property payroll sales and income to fund property tax relief in Linn county.
Linn county legislative liaison committee maps a countywide cooperation plan giving every citizen eight legislators. Sen. Tom Riley says coordination will run Des Moines and Linn county sessions with weekly Des Moines meetings and monthly Cedar Rapids Marion meetings.
