Burns Withdraws From Detroit Coach Consideration

The University of Detroit announced Jerry Burns of the University of Iowa asked to withdraw his name for the head football coach job. Mulroy said Detroit plans to name a new coach within days and Burns was one of several candidates. Reports suggested Burns could have the job, which Mulroy denied. Meanwhile Iowa assistant Jerry Hilgenberg is expected to join Michigan staff under coach Bump Elliott as Elliott prepares to succeed Bennie Oosterbaan.

Calvary Baptist completed its fourth round with a 3-0 sweep of Christ Church as Trinity Lutheran suffered its second loss in 12 games. First Christian defeated Trinity 18-13 while St. Mark's remained near the leaders.

Southeast high school basketball poll rankings released

Iowa City led southeast district with 61 points while Mason City topped the Northeast with 70 and East Waterloo 62. Keokuk and Manning led other districts as Des Moines Roosevelt and Marshalltown clash for Central honors. Sioux Center and LeMars led the Northwest in a tight race with Sioux Center at 69.

Valdes Gains Backing in Pro Title Claim

New York boxing officials backed Nino Valdes as world heavyweight champion after Bobby Gleason, his promoter, announced the claim. The New York Boxing Managers Association voted to recognize Valdes, with about 70 members voting to strip Floyd Patterson and award the crown to Gleason and Valdes.
