A Davenport blaze at St Elizabeth ward of Mercy hospital killed 31 women and left six missing believed dead. Fire fought for four hours as barred windows trapped patients many burned beyond recognition and identified later by nurses and chaplains amid chaotic rescue efforts.

Williams files cross petition for separate maintenance

Mrs Louise Williams, wife 16 to Cedar Rapids’ James F Williams, filed a cross petition seeking temporary alimony of 35 dollars a week and funds to return from Ohio to present her case. She alleges he kicked her out of bed on several occasions and asks for legal fees. The hearing was set for January 16 on the court’s motion calendar.

Korean student slain in dormitory fight at Dubuque university

In Dubuque AP report, 24 year old Chun Kenn Oh from Seoul is found slain in Steffens hall after a fight over a $6.30 check. Duk Sang Choi, also of Seoul, is held on an open charge after admitting to going to the room with a razor.

Dr. Byron H. McKeeby Dies at 82 in Cedar Rapids

Cedar Rapids dentist Dr. Byron H. McKeeby, 82, died Friday night after a long illness in a Cedar Rapids hospital. A 49 year city resident and former university graduate of Iowa dental class of 1894, he retired in 1946 after a 45 year practice. He was the model for the farmer in Grant Wood's American Gothic though he disliked farming. He lived at 1512 First Avenue NE and earlier practiced in Winthrop.

Four Die in Tenement Fire in Downtown St Louis

Four persons perished Friday night in a fast moving fire that swept a two story frame tenement in downtown St Louis. Four others were hospitalized and several residents were treated and released. All tenants were African American.

AP report lists Anna Neal 52 nurse aide and Maggie Tubberty 85 Minnie Madden 80 Mary Ryan 85 among identified dead at Mercy hospital. Missing presumed dead include Mina Schneider 53 Davenport Amanda Stillwell 37 Alvina Kruse 77 Lillian Keating 39 Lydia Turner 90 Davenport. Other identifications include Marilyn Beals Rock Island and a woman identified by diamond ring near Burlington.
