Rosa Taube 88 died after a long illness at her Marion home while city crews struggled with heavy snowfall. She was a member of the Concord Presbyterian Church and survived by her husband Leonard and daughter Katherine Taube. Burial will be in Cedar Memorial Cemetery with services at Murdoch Funeral Home.
In southwest Guyana the government loyal Amerindian Abel Derrick was killed amid uprisings in the Rupununi area as rebel forces faced government troops. Victor Hernandez, another Amerindian government board member, was killed when rebels blew a police outpost with a bazooka. Three soldiers were wounded in a one hour gun battle near the Brazilian border. Prime Minister Forbes Burnham said rebels were led by ranching families with alleged support from Venezuela, and that about half the rebels had been captured. The death toll reached 14, including seven policemen.
Bay City Michigan authorities report Lawrence Herber 45 and Thelma 42 died in an apartment fire caused by a smoldering cigarette. Three of their children Marie 3 Darla 4 and James 10 died in a year fire also linked to careless smoking. The blaze struck in the night leaving a family torn by back to back tragedies.
