Big Shipbuilding Plan Brought To Congress By Rivers

Rep. L Mendel Rivers spokesman said the committee introduced a $3.8 billion shipbuilding program to add 70 ships including a nuclear powered aircraft carrier. The plan would start in 1970 with 19 warships 21 support ships and six Polaris submarines plus modernization. Congress would must pass the proposal and provide appropriations.

Teen soldier teaches Viet Cong village school in Vietnam

Dennis Coello a 19 year old specialist teaches English and later math and reading to a class of 70 in Ton Phong village near Long Binh Vietnam. He travels daily after radio repair work, faces occasional VC threats and ambushes, and trains students in soccer while his work is aided by Red Cross Trinity Lutheran and Cedar Rapids community groups.

Dog Silenced by Dial Telephones at Nashwauk

A Nashwauk Minnesota story notes Rusty the long haired dog famed for talking on the telephone will have to adapt as Dial Telephone service arrives. The dog often knocked the receiver from the hook and barked into the manual switchboard handled by Northwestern Bell operators who grew fond of him. He would yelp back when greeted by the operators and growl if they meowed at him.

Literacy gains in 1950s worldwide study notes rise

AP reports a UN yearbook shows school enrollments up 8 percent from 1950 to 1965 and adult literacy climbing from 700 million to 740 million in the 1950s to 1960s. The adult population grew 20 percent this decade, with illiteracy dropping from 44 to 39 percent.
