Friday at 7 30 p m crews found a smoke filled house at 1022 Sixth Street SE no fire reported Water pipes thawing caused smoke and set off the general alarm Katherine reported the incident to authorities.
Fred Cress aged 52 of 417 Sixth Street SE died at University of Iowa City at 9 p.m. Henry H. Berends aged 47 died at his home 1271 Twenty-first Avenue SW at 6 20 a m Saturday Mrs Elizabeth Gneier aged 75 of 816 Avenue NW died at a nursing home in Independence Saturday morning.
St Luke s hospital reports a son born to Mr and Mrs Joe Dutrt at 1831 Mallory street SW on January 5 Mercy hospital records a son to Mr and Mrs Raymond LeClerc at 1337 Fifth street NW on January 6 a daughter to Mr and Mrs Willis Winders at 1006 Ninth street NW January 6 a son to Mr and Mrs Paul Byrne at 1730 Fifth avenue SE January 6 Born to Mr and Mrs Martin Kolstopf near Newhall a son John Martin Tuesday
Albert Alexander age 26 of 37 Circle Drive SE was fined $25 and costs for failing to identify after an accident and for failing to report an accident. Donald Krossdell of Edgerton Minnesota was fined $10 and costs for speeding 85 in a restricted zone. All appeared before Justice H R Churchill.
Evelyn Lucille Smith and Annette Burris obtain divorces from their husbands, both on cruel and inhuman treatment grounds, with Judge H C Ring presiding. Georgia Oldeen’s divorce from Clarence Oldeen cited cruel treatment. custody awarded to Mrs Oldeen for their daughter. Names and dates reflect marriages in 1939, 1934, and 1937.
Marriage licenses issued to Bernard Lang and Myrtle Carlson both of Cedar Rapids and to Ernest Wood and Tessie Wood both of Cedar Rapids.

Hubert Wood of Cedar Rapids received a six month county jail sentence after a theft charge for taking lightning rod cable and equipment from buildings on a farm owned by A. Beatty between Beverly and Fairfax on December 21. Wood will be released after 60 days on good behavior. the stolen material was sold as scrap copper at a local junkyard. The case against a 17 year old youth who allegedly accompanied Wood was dropped. Damages were said to be settled by County Attorney G. K. Thompson.
Mrs. J. C. Pavey a 26 year old parolee from Sioux City pled guilty to falsely uttering a $20 check written on a Humboldt bank. She was given an indeterminate seven year term at Rockwell City reformatory and paroled to a Des Moines woman with monthly reports starting February 1. County officials said related claims have been settled.
Carl Misbach a Cedar Rapids fireman filed a notice of appeal to the state supreme court. He challenges Judge Haas's ruling dissolving a temporary injunction that blocked a Cedar Rapids civil service commission hearing. Misbach was suspended 45 days after a false fire alarm suspected as his fault.

About 500 morphine tablets were taken. Bond set at $1500 with no bond furnished. Officials traced Curry after inspecting a Cedar Rapids hotel room he reportedly occupied.
Federal grand jury accuses Augusta Carmichael of destroying government property while seeking revenge for a foreclosure. Alleged acts include breaking windows, pouring oil on wallpaper, painting woodwork, smashing fixtures, tearing chandeliers, and flooding the building by an upstairs water tap. Maximum penalty cited is $10,000 fine or ten years in prison.
On a state motion and at the requesting witness Wil fred A. Kehrli Judge H C Ring Saturday dismissed a larceny charge filed against Ronald Mc Donnell 27 of Coggan. Kehrli said he lost 22 dollars after socializing with McDonnell in a group near Cog gon.
Fousek dies after being struck by a car while crossing a street. He weighed over 260 pounds and was hit as another car passed. Wittenmeyer says brakes worked and no skid marks were found. Franks, drinking nearby, says he warned Fousek to wait for traffic. Fousek died en route to hospital. He lived in Coggon and worked at Penick and Ford.

Henry H Berends, born May 28 1892 in Germany, died after a prolonged illness. He lived in Cedar Rapids for 22 years after coming from Wellsburg. Survived by wife, two sons Robert and Donald at home, his parents Mr. and Mrs. Henry Berends, two sisters Mrs Delia Scudder and Mrs Minnie Futhey, and two brothers Conrad and Lawrence Berends, all of Cedar Rapids. Funeral arrangements to be announced. friends may call at Moen chapel.
Mrs Elizabeth Gneier widow of Charles F Gneier died Saturday morning at McSweeney Nursing Home Independence after a long illness. Born in Germany August 24 1864 she came to the United States at age 14 and lived in Cedar Rapids ever since. Surviving are sons Harry Cedar Rapids Laurence Dubuque and Leonard Des Moines with six grandchildren. She belonged to the Homesteaders and Independent Order of Foresters. Funeral services will be in Turner chapel with time to be announced. callers may visit the chapel Sunday.

Los Angeles reports actress Dorothy Mackaye, 37, who once married her husband’s killer after prison terms, died from injuries from a car accident. Her husband Ray Raymond, actor, died in 1927 from a beating by Paul Kelly during a dispute over Kelly’s attentions to Mackaye. Kelly is a Hollywood film star.
