Farm Rail consortium eyed to aid farmers and lines
Chicago Rock Island president John W. Ingram outlined a Farm Rail plan to form a Midwest private railroad consortium. It would coordinate freight with up to four railroads including Milwaukee Road South Dakota and Iowa lines, Illinois Central Gulf, Katy and Kansas City Southern, sharing terminals yards and equipment to serve thin density farming regions. The program aims to benefit multiple lines, not just the Rock Island.

Farm Rail plan aims to pool Midwest freight interests
Ingram argues FarmRail will be a railroad consortium not an operator. It would coordinate multiple lines including Rock Island Milwaukee and KCS with a shared yard in Council Bluffs and potential track sharing to speed service. Financing could come from existing Congress approvals under the 1976 act. KC Southern expresses cautious interest.
