Committee Proposes Credit Reform Aimed at Fairer Practices
A sweeping plan from the National Commission on Consumer Finance urges broader access to credit and stronger protections for borrowers. It calls for non-discriminatory lending, end to harassment by collectors, and limits on wage garnishment and seizure of goods. The report notes evidence of gender and racial bias and recommends state measures to curb unfair collection methods while ensuring creditworthy borrowers in poverty areas can obtain reasonable terms. Credit should be a privilege for the deserving, not a universal right, the commission says.
