The Gazette asks 53rd District contenders to respond on drunken driving laws budget fixes and school safety. Hasley supports safe operation proofs and higher teacher pay while Taylor backs lowering OWI limits to 0.08 and tougher boat OWI rules. Both discuss tobacco funds for health and education and grade sharing incentives.
The candidates say the 53rd District race will cost far less than last November’s 52nd District contest won by Patrick Shey. Both stress education, with Hasley criticizing media influence on schools and Taylor backing training paths and utility deregulation safeguards. They differ on social issues and campaign finance reform, with Hasley proposing a ban on gifts from citizens.
The notice cites the Auditor's office address at 930 First St. SW and discusses regulations on selling cigarette papers to minors. It also notes that Taylor sees no need to raise the interstate speed limit in Iowa. Contact Senior Editor Ken Sullivan at 319 398 8243 or kensu fyiowa.com.
