Five elderly residents perished and fifteen were injured when the main building at Cherokee county poor farm burned in Gaffney South Carolina early Tuesday. Convicts from nearby prison camp rescued screaming inmates and aided transport to hospitals as the blaze, discovered around 3 a.m. by Mrs Bess Blanton wife of the superintendent, left only the brick main building burning. Names of the dead were Tom Young 73 Pink Young 68 Frank Franklin 75 Wash Gregory about 70 and Alf Emory about 70.
Four women were found dead Tuesday in a kitchen in Elizabeth New Jersey due to gas fumes from a disconnected gas tube. Authorities deem the deaths accidental and identify the victims as Carrie Harth 79 Angelina Rode 55 Tillie Kuehn 69 and Carrie Harth 51. William McVey who lives on the second floor discovered the scene after smelling gas and tracing it to a ceiling gas light with a loose tube connection.
The Federal Trade Commission asked Congress to grant power to block mergers and asset purchases that reduce competition. It urged extending authority to ban unfair practices in interstate commerce and to regulate favorable terms for big firms. George Callender, 24, bought a revolver to celebrate the new year and in a drunken jest pointed it at four patrons in a north side tavern. Patrolman William Raab, nearby in a booth with his wife, fired five shots when he mistook the gun for a holdup, and Callender was killed.
Four persons sustained injuries in separate early morning auto accidents Tuesday. Charles Perkins a 60 year old hotel porter was hospitalized with a dislocated left shoulder after being struck near the Roosevelt hotel. Mrs William Metela was bruised and hurt her left hip on Third street SE. Harry Clark driver of the car said he could not avoid the collision. No driver was reported at police headquarters. Measurable aims include bonus payments, old age pensions, NRA extension, work relief, farm act amendments, public works, banking reform, utilities regulation, 30 hour week, and currency devaluation.
President Roosevelt indicated to Senator Huey Long that public works loans to Louisiana may be withheld until Long backed legislation is repealed or clarified. The move followed Louisiana measures creating Long’s political dominance and affected about 60 projects including a 1.8 million loan and 700 thousand grant for New Orleans sewage.
Public schools in Cedar Rapids will remain closed until next Monday to avert an influenza like pneumonia linked to the World War era flu. Dr V H Hasek and Superintendent Arthur Deamer say no current epidemic, but a few suspicious local cases prompted extension of Christmas vacation as a precaution.
