Open meetings law tightens government access in Iowa

The Iowa open meetings law, effective today, requires more meetings to be held in open session and gives 24 hour notices and tentative agendas. It applies to all city councils boards and commissions and multi member bodies created by statute or executive order. Closed sessions are limited to specific exemptions and must be tape recorded with minutes kept for a year, while penalties can include fines or removal from office for violations. Cedar Rapids officials say many meetings will stay open, with electronic meetings allowed under rules and agendas to be posted in advance.
