Cattle Prices Hit Highs Across 1949 Despite Pork and Poultry Competition

A Department of Agriculture summary shows 1949 average fat steer costs at 10.42 per hundredweight in the United States, the highest since 1937, with prices rising from a weak start to a peak of 15.40 in Chicago. Cattle demand remained strong, cows sold at their highest since 1929, calves near 10, and bulls and feeders posting gains despite wide spreads between top and bottom prices. Government buying orders helped sustain high levels, while grain-fed feeders and finishers saw improved returns through the year despite some midyear declines.
