Hughes Signs Twelve Bills Including Beer Credit Ban

Gov. Harold Hughes signed twelve acts into law in Des Moines, among them a ban on tavern operators receiving credit on wholesale beer, closing a loophole that shields breweries and distributors from subsidizing bars. The actions also included tax refunds for farmers using motor fuel in specialized machinery and measures on insurance, highways, soil districts borrowing, Clinton ward amendments, and land patent corrections in Louisa County.

County Zoning Change Okay Hit by Wiley

DES MOINES A bill to restrict county zoning officials from probing farmers personal affairs passed the senate 7 to 10 and goes to the house. Sen. Martin Wiley opposed the measure saying it could enable farm adjacent residents to start trailer courts while keeping land for agricultural use. The bill would strike six words from Sec. 358A.2, exempting farms from certain regulations as a primary livelihood.

The liquor group appears to have used the name first, while the anti Sunday closing faction formally incorporated the title later with Secretary of State Melvin D. Synhorst.
