Matisse Cutouts Revealed Through Private Process
Cowart and colleagues catalogued a hidden body of Matisse cutouts, showing how he trimmed paper in a precise circle to form contours. Pinholes and glued scraps reveal the artist’s method, reflecting a new art form and his controlled public image. The touring show, ending in St. Louis, underscores the works' fragility and impact.
