A 50 year old Hiawatha woman, Billie Elmore, died from chest injuries after a head on collision at the Highway 218 and Airport Road intersection. Her husband George, 57, was in serious condition at Mercy Hospital ICU. Their son John, 14, and brother Donovan Elmore, 53, were treated and released.
Meth-Wick Manor at 1224 13th St NW Cedar Rapids received a full skill care license for up to 50 beds after a Feb 2 survey, upgrading from a conditional license issued Dec 20 due to paperwork deficits. Americana Healthcare Center and two other Cedar Rapids homes with conditional licenses are also addressing cited problems.
A propane laden tank car exploded in Waverly causing extensive fires and injuring over 100 people. Officials initially reported 21 dead with casualty counts fluctuating as rescue operations continued. A second tanker caught fire and firefighters worked to prevent a further blast while evacuations and utility shutoffs were implemented.
