Nautilus to be Decommissioned After 25 Years of Service
The Nautilus the world’s first nuclear submarine will begin decommissioning in July 1979. Built by General Dynamics in Groton its launch in 1954 under Mamie Eisenhower set records for submerged ranges and distance. While it pioneered nuclear propulsion the vessel faced rising maintenance costs and obsolescence as newer submarines emerged.
