State Appeals Judge's Ruling In Drug Case

The state of Iowa appeals to the Eighth Circuit after U.S. District Judge Edward J. McManus overturned a Black Hawk County drug conviction of Donald Hines of Waterloo. Hines, sentenced in 1973 to five years, argued an illegal search violated his rights. McManus ordered release, stayed 30 days for an appeal or retrial.

Moynihan Won’t Run For Senate in New York

Dan Moynihan will not seek the Democratic nomination for New York’s U.S. Senate race. He reportedly declined to run to avoid a brutal primary, with associates saying opposition within the party, including from black leaders, would be intense. Iowa January jobless rate at 5.3 percent

Des Moines AP reports Iowa’s seasonally adjusted unemployment in January was 5.3 percent, unchanged from the forecast and down 0.6 point from December’s 5.9 percent. The national rate was 7.8 percent. Iowa employed 1,223,900 people without work.

No Plans For Recovery Try on Aid Payments

Federal officials doubt they will recover 1.4 million dollars in social security overpayments to elderly, blind and disabled lowans during six months in 1974. The overpayments were revealed in an auditor's report on the Social Security Administration by HEW. Iowa's share was part of 197 million dollars in similar overpayments across 30 states in early 1974, during the start of a new payment distribution system.

Bertelli Announces Candidacy for 30th District

Monty Bertelli, 27, of rural Linn County, declared as a Republican candidate for state representative in Iowa’s 30th District. A Drake Law School graduate and former legislative aide, Bertelli previously ran in 1974 and now works as an attorney and manager at Ray Bertelli Sons, Inc. He is married to Carol Bertelli, librarian at Mercy Hospital Health Services. The 30th District covers Linn County areas north and east of Cedar Rapids, Hiawatha, and three Cedar Rapids precincts.

Lawmakers push to block food stamp changes

Nixon Trip Ends Visit as He Leaves Peking for Canton

President Nixon and Pat Nixon wrapped up their Peking visit and flew to Kweilin aboard a Chinese government plane. Crowds waved in the rain as gifts from hosts were loaded, including a 90 piece porcelain tea set and Boehm studio porcelain.
