House Transportation Committee approved Study Bill 80 to raise rural interstate speed limits from 65 to 70 mph and raise fines from 43 to 82 dollars for 65 mph in a 55 mph zone. The measure would fund state patrol vehicle replacement with new revenue and raise court costs from 17 to 30 dollars. Governors’ concerns cited as Republicans backed the bill and Democrat Geri Huser supported it.

House GOP proposes alternative to Vilsack early childhood plan

Iowa House Republicans unveiled an 11.7 million plan to expand preschool and child care access, enhance quality, and coordinate services without a government run system. The proposal increases funding for school ready programs, boosts child care eligibility, funds a quality initiative, and creates a new administrator and a web information system to guide families. Governor Vilsack called it a good first step but incomplete and emphasized increased flexibility, provider pay, eligibility, and enrollment in accredited preschools.
