Waterloo soldier dies in Iraq mine blast
Sgt. Eric Steffeney, 28, of Waterloo Iowa, was killed early Wednesday in Iraq while clearing a road of land mines north of Baghdad. His father Gary Steffeney confirmed the incident noting Steffeney was checking another mine that had been detonated earlier. He served in the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit, the Army Bomb Squad.

Pertussis surge noted by Iowa lab chief in Coralville
Lucy DesJardin, chief molecular biologist at the University Hygienic Laboratory, says pertussis testing in Iowa has surged with over 10,000 tests in the past year and more than 2,500 in both November and December. The Oakdale campus lab handles more than 95 percent of state testing and reports about 7 percent positivity. Unpaid overtime has kept up, with no backlog reported.
