Lanny Olney of Pattersburg Missouri was awarded 403000 by a Cedar Rapids federal court jury for injuries from a neighbor s rifle shot through trailer walls in Oxford Junction nearly 30 years ago. The award marks a rare large damages verdict for a non disabled plaintiff. Olney remains unemployed and in job rehab after surgeries and ongoing arm problems from the Oct 8 incident involving Leland Toerber and a Springfield rifle.
An unemployed construction worker named Leroy Cotton, 30, shot a man to death in a Syracuse apartment and injured two police officers with a high powered rifle. He then held a 19 year old pregnant woman and her young daughter hostage as negotiations continued from a police command post. The woman’s husband was not present, and Cotton made demands including a cigarette pack which police declined.
