In a major Viet Nam offensive, North Vietnamese forces struck U S marine camps near the DMZ killing 36 Marines and wounding 115. Reports say more than 2,500 enemy troops have been killed overall with 200 U S troops killed in three days of fighting and continued heavy bombardment across the country.
President Nixon affirmed U S support for Britain's entry into a enlarged Common Market during talks with Prime Minister Harold Wilson at Downing Street. The discussions also covered NATO, European security, East West relations, and future U S Europe policies with Queen Elizabeth II present.
The Iowa House passed 106 to 8 a bill creating four Monday holidays starting 1971. It designates Washington's Birthday Memorial Day Labor Day and Veterans Day on specific Mondays, adds Lincoln's Birthday as a holiday, and removes Columbus Day. It keeps New Year's Independence Day and Christmas Day as holidays.

He left a note calling himself human torch No 2 and supporting Jan Palach who burned himself earlier this year for reform and Soviet occupation demands.

Dean Andrews, once convicted of perjury, testified that Clay Shaw was not the mysterious Clay Bertrand. He said he named Bertrand on the spur of the moment and that Shaw was not Bertrand, contradicting Jim Garrison’s theory. Andrews’s perjury conviction is under appeal.
Washington UPI reports Attorney General Mitchell designates Charles Rogovin an assistant attorney general in Massachusetts as administrator of the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration.
Anti war and anti American rallies largely fizzled as President Nixon carried out the Britain visit schedule. A small Monday night rally near Claridge’s drew a few hundred. a Trafalgar Square gathering produced about 10 supporters. Nixon greeted crowds at Buckingham Palace, shook hands, and later laid a wreath at Westminster Abbey before a Commons appearance, a historic first by a sitting U.S. president.
Four people died and a fifth was injured when a mud and water wall crushed a cabin on Mt Baldy lower slope. Cars were buried and a fire station evacuation center collapsed killing at least one, with eleven others missing.
