Irrigated Acreage In State Doubled in ’56

Iowa State college reports irrigation in Iowa rose to about 27 000 acres in 1956 with 401 farmers in 75 counties. Sorghums Offer Drought Resilient Substitution for Corn

Iowa trials show sorghum grain and forage varieties as viable substitutes in dry areas. Spotted alfalfa aphid expands to 16 more states

The spotted alfalfa aphid, the fastest spreading foreign insect, invaded 16 additional states last year and is now found in 30 states across the southern two thirds of the country. Oklahoma reports a 25 percent alfalfa yield loss while California, Kansas and Texas also note damages. Entomologists push resistant alfalfa varieties and biological control as promising tools, with no man made barriers likely to halt spread.

Irrigation Short Course Planned at Iowa State College

The third annual Iowa State College irrigation short course will be held March 18 and 19 focusing on operation and maintenance of irrigation systems. Hobart Beresford notes a surge in irrigator numbers with 401 farmers covering over 28 000 acres in 1956, up from prior years. Experts from Iowa State, Nebraska, and Michigan State, plus equipment dealers, will attend, with registration and sessions in the Memorial Union and displays in the agricultural engineering building.
