Twenty two safety patrol members at Grant Wood Elementary voted to name a cockapoo Mikey the first official mascot. Patrol volunteer Mikey will attend regular meetings and social events as the new force is welcomed by Grant Wood sixth graders Lieutenant Amy Brown Captain Heidi Houghton and Elisa Roberson.
Six people were arrested in Linn County on Tuesday and Wednesday for drunken driving. Michael J. Bronson faced additional charges of disobeying a traffic control device, and Gene A. Benner and Paul F. Hostak were cited for related offenses. Others include Thomas B. Conner, David J. Kauffman, and Kurt A. Smith with various traffic violations.
Louis DeBennedette of Cedar Rapids was sentenced by U.S. Magistrate Ronald Longstaff to 30 days in jail for trying to block the Des Moines U S Courthouse during a draft registration protest. He pleaded guilty to attempting to interfere with justice and declined community service.
The Cedar Rapids City Council approved a one year contract with AFSCME Local 620 representing about 360 blue collar city workers. It provides a 2 percent raise on July 1 and January 1 with union ratification Feb 17. The Firefighters Union remains unresolved and a fact finder’s report is under review.
Cedar Rapids buys punitive damage insurance for police up to 1 million dollars at about 28000 annually.
