Iowa State President grilled over hiring and spending hikes
Lawmakers pressed Iowa State University President Steven Leath on hiring practices and use of state funds as university presidents sought more money. Quirmbach questioned two high salary hires, while Leath defended exceptions for top talent. The session noted ISU enrollment at a record 36,660 and a drop in state aid to 29 percent of the budget, with promises to cut the student faculty gap and curb debt if funding rises. Bruce Harreld of Iowa said UI would restore scholarships if tuition rises with peers and efficiencies offset costs.
