Miro slava Nachodska, 22, a Czechoslovak ice skating star, told reporters in Linz Austria she sought political asylum in the United States. She said she fled to Vienna just before a return home after being sent to participate in the world championships.
The Iowa attorney general ruled Linn County cannot join with Cedar Rapids in a shared ambulance service. The cancellation threatens short term gaps in coverage, with the board seeking to keep the same service or hire a private operator.
Charles Lanier, 28, admitted his role in a local store holdup in Gaffney South Carolina after the operator identified him by his striking blue eyes. Police reported the confession followed inquiries into the theft and the arrest.

Gov. Hoegh on Wednesday voiced full confidence in Lt. Gov. Elthon and the Iowa Senate and denied that any of his friends attacked Elthon or the Senate. The statement followed a public flare up over highway commission appointments and a stalled meeting between Hoegh and Elthon amid tension with the Senate. Elthon noted Hoegh’s defense of Eisenhower in 1952 and stressed he had not sold rock to the commission but supplied it as low bidder for highway projects. he urged Hoegh to defend Elthon sooner.
Philip Hoover a 27 year old station attendant recalls a blast at the Twin Towers cafe that blew him through a wall after gas fumes filled a grease room. He suffered first and second degree burns while his boss Floyd Wedemeier escaped. They had drained gasoline from a 1954 station wagon owned by Dean Jacobson of Marengo and a spark from a gas heater is blamed for the explosion. Hoover says there were multiple blasts and he is grateful to have survived.
Cedar Rapids official Waples files a nomination petition to seek re election to the three three year terms on the school board. He is a 39 year old mortgage executive and has served since 1952. Also seeking reelection are Ben H Peterson and W Sandoe Jordan.
Mexican officials suspended all baseball games at the federal penitentiary after discovering inmates preferred the balls to play. Several balls delivered to convicts contained marijuana, drawing attention to the unusual incident and security concerns.

DES MOINES The Iowa Senate approved a measure dubbed the warm beer bill by a 44 to 4 vote. The bill bars sale of refrigerated beer by taverns and stores for off premises consumption. The House previously did not approve a similar proposal two years ago.
The senate passed 31 to 18 sending to the house a bill to raise the state sales tax to 3 percent. It would empower the State Beer Permit Board to deny permits and ban chilled beer for off premise consumption. The measure also raises class C fees and redefines minors as under 21.
The Iowa House approved by a 100 to 0 vote a bill to confine suspected sexual psychopaths to state mental institutions for treatment. Rep. Jacob Van Zwel said current law sends sex offenders to penal institutions with no treatment and they are freed as threats. County attorneys could seek district court hearings. judges would order confinement only if warranted.
President Eisenhower blasted Democrats for tying a $20 per person income tax cut to other tax changes. He warned the move would return the nation to deficit spending and indicated he might veto the proposal if not separated. He urged careful spending restraint to enable possible future tax relief.
Edgar Faure was approved as premier of France by a 369 to 210 vote in the national assembly, ending a 19 day political crisis triggered by the Mendes-France fall. Faure, 46, is a Radical Socialist similar to Mendes-France with a slightly more conservative tilt.
