DES MOINES The senate defeated amendments to raise the sales tax from 2 to 3 percent with exemptions for foods. Atomic test jolts Las Vegas during George shot dawn blast

The George shot of the 1955 nuclear series rocked Las Vegas at 5 45 am as 17 congressmen and 200 military observers watched from Yucca Flat. The detonation sent an orange flash visible from Los Angeles and produced two shocks felt in the city with an atomic cloud rising over 20 000 feet. No property damage was reported.

Liberal Kansas AP reports Binnie Dick aged 28 set a record time in the pancake race finishing 415 yards in one minute five seconds. She surpassed Doris Millward of Olney England by 13 seconds. This marks Liberal’s third straight title in six years of the competition.

Priest Shot During Mass in St Louis Parish

A priest, Rev. Andrew B. Schierhoff, 33, was shot in the leg while saying Mass at a St Louis church. A 40 year old woman, Mrs. Hubert Samson, described as a former mental patient, was overpowered as about 50 attendees heard her rambling grievances against parish priests. Two men aided police in subduing her.

Too Young for Boys Division Tops Adults at San Antonio Show

Dan Wade Crewelge, seven, could not enter the boys division in the San Antonio Livestock Exposition, so his Hereford steer Shorty competed in the open class alongside adults. Shorty, named for the boy’s grandfather, won grand champion and will be sold at Friday’s auction after last year’s champion brought $12,750.

Chelsea Man Killed Four Hurt in Crash

A 21-year-old Chelsea man, Arthur Dolach, was killed when his car rear‑ended a semi near a weigh station on Highway 30 about 10 miles west of Cedar Rapids. Four others were injured including June Nakola and Mary Backen. Backen was pinned for over an hour. Both Nakola and Petermeir were treated at Iowa City area hospitals and St. Luke’s Cedar Rapids. Sheriff said Dolach’s car was demolished after the high‑speed impact. This marked the state’s 77th traffic fatality of the year.

Mil ler, 66, LaPorte City man dies from crash injuries

Grover C. Miller, 66, of LaPorte City, died in a Waterloo hospital from injuries sustained in a car truck crash near LaPorte City last Thursday. He had been unconscious since the crash, which occurred near LaPorte City.
