Merle A. Parrish supervisor for the ten Me Too stores died after his car collided head on with a semi near the Atkins corner west of Cedar Rapids on Highway 30. The impact sent both vehicles down a ten foot embankment and Parrish died after extraction from the wreckage.
Romania sped up military preparations after reports Germany pressed to lift the export ban on aviation fuel. Dr. Karl Clodius planned to press for Germanys full 1940 oil quota as 1.6 million Romanians were mobilized and reservists reported.
In Gunnison Colorado a nearly sixty-year-old ranch woman hiked two days in improvised wooden snowshoes through four feet of snow covering 15 miles to notify authorities of her husband Charles Elliott's death. Coroner said it took six men two more days to reach her cabin and recover the body.
The city introduces one hour parking on First street between Third and Fourth avenues and on Second street between Fourth and Fifth avenues. An ordinance restricts Fifth street to two hours between Third and Fifth avenues. Signs post near the First and Second avenue bridges limit parking to one hour. Traffic police, led by Captain Gordon Hughes, will begin tagging violators Friday.
The United States embassy announced the release of the last eight American citizens held as Spanish Civil War prisoners, including Harold E. Dahl of Champaign Illinois. Dahl and two others arrived at Seville and will sail to New York on the Exiria Friday, ending a protracted State Department effort to secure their freedom.
Martin Studer and his nephew Howard Studer were injured when Howard’s truck collided with the rear of Ned Sadler’s semi-trailer five miles east of Cedar Rapids on highway 30 at 9 15 p m The elder Studer had head and knee injuries while Howard suffered facial cuts and a fractured ankle Both were taken to Mercy hospital Sadler posted a 15 dollar bond to appear next Tuesday on a charge of failing to place flares

Funeral set for Sunday at Moon chapel with burial in Dunkard cemetery.
Lee Hoening age 29 of Toddville was jailed after his car struck a parked vehicle belonging to Don Nelson on 3420 Avenue NE. Hoening and companion Charles Willits 22 were intoxicated when arrested an hour and a half after the incident.
Eastern Iowa reports a thin layer of ice and snow raising accident tolls. By Thursday noon sun and rising temperatures began to melt the coating as crews work to clear dangerous conditions. Snowfall was heaviest Wednesday with .06 inch total, temps fluctuating from 36 to a low 14. Authorities warned motorists to use extreme caution as conditions eased late Thursday.
Federal narcotics agents captured the alleged kingpin Joe Olivia also known as Joe Oliver, ending a seven month chase. Olivia pleaded guilty in federal court to an indictment from last July and received a five year prison sentence as the head of a Kansas City centered narcotics operation worth about twelve million dollars yearly.
Washington observes the 208th anniversary of George Washington's birth with memorial exercises. A wreath is laid at the Washington Monument base as readings of the Farewell Address are scheduled in Congress. House adjourns and Lord Lothian may attend a diplomatic gallery event.
James Roosevelt, the President's oldest son, announced no plans to marry Miss Romelie Schneider, his former nurse at the Mayo Brothers clinic. He said he would stay single and continue producing pictures.
Byron G. Allen of Des Moines won the Democratic nomination for the six term short race to fill the congressional vacancy after the death of C. C. Dowell. His chief rival is Robert K. Goodwin of Redfield. Goodwin is mayor, farmer, and brick and tile business partner. Allen has five years in the Iowa House and previously ran as an independent and as a Republican. The nomination was confirmed as 150 delegates gathered with J. M. Gillespie withdrawing to unify. Dowell served until February.
Jerry Vosdingh a 24 year old driver suffered injuries to his right ankle and pelvic bone and cuts when his car collided with a City Lines bus at the Third street and Fifteenth avenue SW intersection. The bus driver John Stastny reported the southbound bus had the right of way. Vosdingh and bus passenger Vladislav Zumr were taken to Mercy hospital with injuries but Zumr was released after examination.
Soviet Naval Commissar N G Kuznetzoff flew from Moscow to Murmansk and placed the entire red Arctic fleet on a full war footing, a Stockholm report said. London sources denied any confirmed aerial battle off Petsamo sighted by British ships.

Mueller a six footer chained himself to a tree and lived in a soggy tent for three days without food to win the affection of Edith Perkins who has ignored him for 12 years The scissors grinder wore a collar tied to the tree with cement filled padlock and later had to wear the collar to jail Mueller said he met Miss Perkins at a religious meeting and after two dates bombarded her with notes and verses Her relatives complained that he spoiled public gatherings and she eventually stayed home Miss Perkins dismissed the gesture calling it ridiculous and noting she only went out with him once to quiet him down
M A Parrish 37 supervisor of the Me-Too food store chain died after a headon collision on U S highway 30 ten miles west of Cedar Rapids during a blizzard. Elmer Grunewald 45 of Quincy Illinois the truck driver was uninjured. A coroner's jury absolved the trucker of blame. Parrish and his wife June Thompson survive with a daughter Patricia. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park.
