The Swedish foreign office asked its Moscow envoy to lodge a formal protest after seven Russian planes dropped 20 incendiary bombs on Pajala. One quarter of the town of about 2,000 people was set ablaze with no casualties reported. officials suspect a navigational error near the Finnish frontier.
A fierce winter storm blankets Finland halting air activity and threatening transport on all fronts including the Mannerheim line. Moscow claims a fortress at Koivisto fell and Russian air raids number in the hundreds, while Helsinki reports heavy Finnish counterattacks and casualties.

Albert Barnes 21 confessed in Cedar Rapids police to stealing four rifles and two shotguns from Harper McIntire Hardware after his wife Rosemary 19 and Bette Giddens 18 were arrested in Sterling Illinois. Barnes pled guilty to breaking and entering and received an indeterminate 10 year term at Anamosa. The women were sentenced to five years in Rockwell City reform school but suspended on good behavior.
Senators Taft Ohio and Van denberg Michigan both deny any plan to halt Dewey’s campaign for president. Taft says no conferences or discussions with Vandenberg about Wisconsin or any primary. Vandenberg says he did not join any movement or discuss his name entering Wisconsin.
A three day old baby weighing 3 pounds 12 ounces will be kept in an electric incubator at the Oscar Sullivan farm near Eaton after a 14 man crew completed wiring from the nearest line. Dr J G Clayton said the incubator would be ready by Wednesday night. The farm home was over a half mile from any power line when the baby was born. President L R Storey called the line-placing effort the fastest in the company's history.
Four persons were charged by police with larceny Tuesday afternoon after two incidents of shoplifting. Mrs Margaret Smith Mrs George Hoffman and Mrs Kathryn Rogers were arrested at 2 25 p m and Raymond H Box at 3 40 p m after allegedly stealing goods from Kresge Montgomery Ward and McLellan stores. A clerk at Montgomery Ward identified Box and a passerby restrained him until officers arrived.
Senator White of Maine announced a senate subcommittee will hold hearings on protests against census questions about personal income, amid ongoing debate in Washington.
Light morning flurries turned to heavier snowfall as temperatures slid from 36 at 1 p.m. to 31 by 2:45 p.m. Precipitation measured .03 inches. The previous 24 hours saw a low of 27 between 6 and 8 a.m. Tuesday's high was 37 from noon to 3 p.m.
The winter quarters of the Cole Brothers circus in Rochester Indiana burned Tuesday night with losses estimated at 150 000 to 200 000. All caged animals including lions tigers leopards monkeys seals were fatally burned. Hundreds of hay eating animals escaped and were later recaptured as 300 horses and 50 workers aided in rescues. One pony was killed and about a dozen camels were loosed outside the burning building.
James Wheeler-Hill former national secretary of the German American Bund was sentenced in New York to an indeterminate term in the city penitentiary for perjury before a legislative committee and the commissioner of jurors. The term may last up to three years.
Dublin report says 104 former officers of the old Irish Republican Army announced a new IRA movement. The group says it will not be a political party in the accepted sense and is understood to aim at a corporate or fascist system.
A kitten leaped from a girl as the Burlington Rock Island Texas Rocket pulled from Dallas. The cat rode 250 miles under a dining car before being found in Houston. Officials searched for the frightened girl while the kitten was saved and sent to Fort Worth.
Linn county supervisors approve a 1940 county budget of 1 393 602, a reduction of 27 893 from 1939. A 2 400 school nurse appropriation is held pending clarification if the nurse will serve only schools or a broader public health program. The decision hinges on county control and the scope of the state led program, amid plans for general health services through the home.
Harold Northrup, 23, of Cedar Rapids, confessed to slugging Charles Rhoda, caretaker at the armory, stealing a 21-jewel yellow gold pocket watch valued at 50 dollars and a flashlight. Judge H. C. Ring sentenced him to 25 years at Anamosa reformatory on robbery with aggravation. Rhoda was hospitalized with a brain concussion after the early morning assault.
Washington report shows Japan was the United States' third largest buyer in the previous year, importing $231.405 million in goods led by scrap iron refined copper and metal working machinery. Despite a year’s drop Japan remained behind Canada and Great Britain in purchases. U S. imports from Japan rose to $161.196 million from $126.762 million in 1938.

A Triumph Explosives powder magazine exploded in Elkton Maryland killing one man and injuring at least 13 others. Firefighters contained the fire and investigated the cause as of the report.
