NIU student wounded in Cole Hall shooting recalls escape
DeKalb man Dan Monaghan regrouped in Iowa City after witnessing the NIU Valentines Day shooting at Cole Hall. He fled with his laptop as gunman Steven Kazmierczak opened fire. five students were killed and 18 injured before the attacker killed himself. Dike Opens Shelter for Stranded Motorists After Storm
In Grundy County Iowa the town of Dike provided food and overnight shelter to more than 30 storm weary travelers at the Community Center on Monday. Local officials Stan Van Halen and Deputy Chris Heerkes organized the effort with Red Cross volunteers and residents donating blankets meals and games. Guests were sheltered in the 50 by 50 foot main room as icy conditions along Highway 20 eased by Tuesday afternoon with at least 30 vehicles in ditches Monday and no motels in town.
