Dave Beck, former Teamsters president, was ordered released on $25,000 bond pending sentencing for income tax evasion. He faces up to five years and a $10,000 fine per count. Beck was convicted on 1948-53 tax evasion charges after a three month trial with 115 witnesses.
Cedar Rapids City Lines prepared to present a fare hike proposal to the city council based on a January 17 to 25 rider survey showing declining ridership. Current fare remains 20 cents for adults, or 50 cents for a token, with service extensions last fall.
Des Moines reports note 5 017 motorists totaling 24 922 penalty points had licenses suspended for traffic violations. The piece also covers ethics questions about staff pay, detailing Rep. Wolf and Rep. Carter salaries and relatives employed in their offices.
Washington reports living costs rose slightly in January with beef, reef and poultry up offsetting declines in fruits pork coffee eggs and milk. An appropriations bill introduced in the Iowa Senate calls for 16 million 242 thousand 330 dollars for a building at the Board of Regents. It also includes 85 thousand dollars for the Historical Society building at the University of Iowa.
New Orleans reports the endangered whooping crane may suffer from oversized feet as Josephine and Crip at Audubon Park zoo trample and destroy their eggs. Zoo staff found the last egg broken Thursday when Crip rose from incubation and another egg trampled soon after the clutch was finished.
A burst of white light high in the sky marked the explosive end of an Atlas ICBM after a three minute flight. The powerful rocket shattered to bits in a spectacular display over the Atlantic when an undetermined malfunction occurred, the Air Force announced.

Vernon Center Point and five Northwestern Bell towns with town headings and will include about 30 area towns as contracts are made with independents. Capital Airlines reported a fourth near miss in a week as an Atlanta bound Constellation avoided an Air Force C-123 over Tennessee near Knoxville at 8000 feet. No injuries among 27 passengers and 5 crew. A separate Capital flight with 37 aboard narrowly missed a military jet near Charlotte. The FAA opened an investigation into the incidents.
James W. Logan a 36 year old business man collapsed Friday afternoon near his Logan and Logan kitchen-designing firm at 82 Second Ave Davenport. He was pronounced dead on arrival at St Luke's hospital at 12 56 PM An autopsy was planned He is survived by his wife three children his brother Earl and his parents Mr and Mrs Warden E Logan of Davenport
London and Philadelphia reports say Prime Minister Macmillan hinted at a Washington visit and a grand jury decision on Fauline Weiss, 48. Weiss faced a murder allegation tied to a plan against her employer’s wife, but the more serious charge was dropped.
New York AP Frank Costello the underworld figure had his U S citizenship revoked by Federal District Judge Archie Dawson on Friday paving the way for deportation to Italy. Costello 68 is serving nine years for income tax evasion and had been dubbed a prime minister of the underworld. The ruling follows a long government effort claiming the citizenship was obtained by fraud and misrepresentation in 1925 with prior wiretap evidence rejected in 1956 the government contends it obtained new non wiretap evidence. At Atlanta prison wardens said Costello has a heart ailment but not near death.
A bill to license private clubs where members may drink their own liquor was introduced in the Iowa Senate by Senator Hitt and others. It targets private, fraternal, service, golf and country clubs with licenses starting July 4 and fees set at 100 or 1000 dollars based on club age. Half the revenue would fund state and the local licensing authority.
