Swedish Actress Marta Toren Dies at 31

Stockholm actress Marta Toren 31 died Tuesday from a rare brain ailment described as subarachnoid hemorrhage by Dr. Goesta von Reis. She had been the lead in a Swedish comedy hit and was stricken after Saturday’s performance. Her husband American screenwriter Leonardo Bercovici arrived for a visit before her illness.

Cedar Rapids Realtors Sponsor Education Session For New Members

The Cedar Rapids Real Estate Board hosted its semi annual educational conference at the Roosevelt hotel with speakers including John J Wagner, Ernest Pence, Ellsworth Kohlman and John Bickel. They discussed financing, property valuation, abstracts and estates while stressing coordinated efforts through the multiple listing program. The event highlighted price timing and reconstruction costs as key factors in pricing homes. A second session is planned for next Tuesday alongside a TV feature of Wild Bill Hickok starring Guy Madison at 6:00 on Channel 9.

Red Cross Shelters Feed Thousands in Regional Flood Crisis

In the peak emergency period 27 Red Cross shelters operated across Kentucky Virginia and West Virginia, housing over 2000 people. More than 19000 were fed as aid shifts to help about 13000 families return to normal living conditions.

The Iowa State Employment Service in Cedar Rapids reports a net drop of 293 workers across 150 firms in January due to seasonal layoffs in non manufacturing sectors like retail and construction. Employment fell to 27 427 from 27 720 in December plus some manufacturing call backs offset losses.
