A former ESL Corp. employee Richard Farley, 40, fired on co workers at the two story Sunnyvale offices. He held out for hours before surrendering as police evacuated victims and negotiated a quiet ending. Three people were believed dead with others wounded.
Conrail engineer Rick Gates pleaded guilty to one count of manslaughter after running a stop signal that led to an Amtrak collision. The 1987 crash killed 16 people and injured more than 170 as Gates faced 16 counts of manslaughter by locomotive. The plea agreement cap is five years in jail and a $1000 fine.
