Iowa State Rep. Vern Lisle of Clarinda announced plans to push a legislative probe into the Iowa Employment Security Commission. He objects to past unemployment payments to wives who joined armed forces husbands in other states and to a claimant who left Iowa for sinus treatment. Lisle says the commission has blurred compensation with social welfare and health insurance and will decide soon whether to pursue a House or joint Senate-House inquiry.

Derby's truck carried Donald Myers of Bloomfield as a passenger and was owned by Steven West of Mt. Vernon. The collision left both left front ends locked on Derby's side, halting one lane as traffic crawled past the wreck while state police investigated.
The Secret Service reported in 1952 that it investigated several obscene and threatening letters addressed to President Eisenhower prior to his January 20 inauguration. Some letters came from individuals who had written to former President Truman. The report notes added protection duties for both a President and a President-elect after the November election.
Cedar Rapids police jailed Raymond F. Frasher 40 of Sioux Falls after he allegedly took nine pennies from a cupboard in his brother and sister in law home and admitted the theft. Detective Norman Young arrested him in a tavern following tips he was converting pennies to folding money. Carolyn Frasher reported the loss.
Earl Mc Nerney aged four months, son of Mr and Mrs Earl Henry McNerney of Des Moines, was found dead in his bed Saturday. Coroner Walter D Anderson ruled pneumonia caused the death.
In a Democratic address Stevenson argues for a cooperative approach with allies, rejects big stick tactics and ultimatums, and calls Democrats to offer constructive proposals. He praises Democratic leaders for measured opposition to Republicans while stressing diplomacy.

Wesley E. Rodin, 25, is scheduled for trial Monday at 9 a.m. in Judge J. E. Heiserman's court on a sodomy indictment involving a 14 year old boy. Rodin's attorneys are James E. Patterson and Robert Nelson. He has been jailed on a $5,000 bond since his November arrest.
Mr and Mrs Marvin H Miller were injured when their car veered from Twelfth Avenue and Tyler Court SE striking a light pole. Police say Miller s sleeve caught on the steering wheel causing the crash. They were treated at Mercy hospital for facial cuts and bruises and released.
Twelve year old Terry Mockbee recalled his paper route on Saturday morning after witnessing his father shoot his mother to death. Police charged Walter H. Mockbee, 38, a machinist, with first degree murder in the slaying of Ida Mockbee, 37.
Harold F. Wurtele, 35, a Council Bluffs salesman, admitted to police Saturday that his claim of being kidnapped in Sioux City by an armed couple was a hoax. He confessed after initial reports of the incident.
Robert L. Knetzer, 41, found guilty of concealing assets from creditors in a failed postwar used car business that collapsed in 1948 with about 3 million dollars in debt. He faces possible five year term and $5,000 fine. trial on perjury and fraud charges pending.
M Sgt Carroll W Butin listed as killed in the crash of a Carswell base B36 in Labrador was found alive in the wreckage buried in snow. He is in serious condition at Goose Bay base hospital after the crash returning from a training flight to England.
Nellie Swenson widow of Thomas Swenson died at the home of her daughter Mrs A G Ellingson in Norway Saturday after a sudden illness born January 15 1866 in Europe came to this country at age 18 lived in Norway for 69 years member of the Lutheran church of Norway survivors include four daughters two sons a sister and a brother with 12 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren funeral services to be announced later
Conrad W. Beck 65 of Rochester Minnesota died in a Cedar Rapids hospital after a long illness. He was married to Lillian Johnson in Chicago. Survived by his wife and a brother Emil Beck of Norway. Funeral 10 a.m. Monday Vine chapel Rochester then Turner Chapel Cedar Rapids 1 30 p.m. Tuesday Rev H G Schwegler First Lutheran officiating. Burial Cedar Memorial cemetery.
Elwin Isaac Smith aged 1027 Second Avenue SE died in St Petersburg Florida last Wednesday. Born May 7 1875 in Sandwich New Hampshire he moved to Iowa at nine. He belonged to St Pauls Methodist church Mt Herman lodge A F and A M Iowa Consistory Order of Eastern Star and Railway Mail Association. Survived by his wife Mary Elizabeth Curless Smith and sister Mrs Roy Copp Glidden Iowa. Funeral in Turner chapel at 11 am Wednesday with calls acceptable at the chapel.
Word has been received of the death of Mrs. Mier Wolf in Miami Beach Florida. She was a Mason City resident and former Cedar Rapids resident. Surviving are daughter Mrs Charles Coddon of St Paul four sons Louis Abbott Wolf of Mason City Robert Wolf of Austin Minnesota and George Wolf of Phoenix Burial will be in Eben Israel cemetery with the body arriving Cedar Rapids Monday night at 11 a m Tuesday.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Sunday. The service note references a burial at Shueyville cemetery and contacts for visit.
The body of Mrs Ida Bell of the Norva Hotel died suddenly Saturday. Her remains were taken from Turner chapel to Clarke mortuary in Charleston Illinois for services and burial.
Kenneth E. Newland of Stephens College disappeared after a State Department mission. His wife in Columbia reported him missing after he took leave to study Point Four programs in India and sent a February letter from New York. Officials noted a confidential file and limited details.

Five Cedar Rapids men paid 25 for gambling at the Narva Recreation Parlor 316 First avenue NE on a city ordinance violation and were released pending disposition in superior court. John E Temeyer 68 of 5070 avenue NW was charged with keeping a gambling house and posted 105 bond. Arresting detective Norman Young booked Charles J Ellis 26 Frank Pavek 42 Kenneth C Burke 53 William T Gregory Jr 40 and Simon J Abraham 61 at 4 42 PM Saturday on gambling charges.
