A former volunteer and attorneys say Iowa City's shelter for abused women improperly supported an employee who helped a woman evade the law. Barbara Carpenter, the shelter’s Volunteer of the Year in 1990, alerted the father to the boys. Carpenter faces harassment claims as she cooperates with authorities.
Toyota Motor Insurance Services to start an insurance tracking operation in Cedar Rapids adding about 30 workers at 32,000 square feet, rising to 80 jobs within two years. The Iowa Senate backed a 31 to 19 vote on a supplemental bill to cover human service entitlements and balance the budget with about 2 percent cuts this year. Jason Van Scoyoc 19 of Camanche convicted on four counts of vehicular homicide for a campground crash that killed Ernest and Kathleen Friis and their two children at Fairbanks Fishing Hole campground. Jury deliberated about six hours. sentencing set for March 6 with potential 10 year terms per count.
