One clean knockout and four TKOs marked the Cedar Rapids Golden Gloves opening at Memorial Coliseum. The 16th annual show continued with semifinals set for Wednesday and finals on Thursday, with Corky Abernathy of Marion among notable entrants.
The Cedar Rapids Golden Gloves second round at Memorial Coliseum offers ticket sales at the box office with fights starting at 8 pm both nights. KCRG will broadcast ringside at 9 15 and 10 15, with Thursday championship tickets sold at local outlets until Thursday afternoon.
In a 160 pound open class match Fort Dodge’s Pete Salvatore defeated Cedar Rapids Joe and Cliff’s Corky Abernathy by knockout at 1:46 of the third round. The win helped Fort Dodge tie for top in the open team standings as six teams earned at least one victory the night.
Two headline attractions highlight the show as Sammy Peters of Tama faces Lee Weekley of Waterloo in the 160 pound open class. Peters seeks a knockout bid to reach Chicago and may meet Don Moorehead or Charles Dumond winner later. Carl Widseth of Davenport boosted his scoring lead in the Mississippi Valley conference last week as Dick Dickson of Franklin and Bob Witt of Clinton tied for second among varsity scorers. Vogt of Clinton topped the sophomores with 162 points.
The Springville McKinley basketball game is moved from Friday to Thursday night to avoid the district wrestling tourney. Varsity action at 8 15 following a 6 45 sophomore game at McKinley gym.
Cedar Rapids hosts the third meeting of London and Wheatland in a district girls meet at Coe fieldhouse. The 9 PM championship follows 7:30 PM consolation pits Coggan and Garrison. The winner advances to Drake fieldhouse Des Moines for the state final.
In Chicago, Sugar Ray Robinson weighs 155 1 2 pounds for a 15 round title bout with Jake La Motta who is listed at 160 pounds. Robinson is a heavy favorite at 3 to 1 or 4 to 1 as the challenger seeks the middleweight crown at Chicago Stadium tonight starting at 9 p.m. CST.
AP reports Chicago stadium hosts the world title bout between Jake LaMotta and Sugar Ray Robinson. The 15 round fight at 160 pounds, with 12 000 plus attendance, purses split 45 percent for LaMotta and 15 percent for Robinson, plus broadcast rights.
