Military halts Florida tire reef cleanup due to troop strain
U S Army and Navy divers will not return this summer to remove tires sunk in 1972 off Fort Lauderdale to form an artificial reef. Only about 10 percent of the 700 000 tires have been cleared as staffing is stretched by conflicts abroad and Haiti relief. The project may resume by 2012 if troop deployments ease.
