Vaudt faults Culver budget as potentially illegal
Iowa State Auditor David Vaudt on Wednesday said Governor Chet Culver's fiscal 2011 budget plan may be illegal because it is not balanced and exceeds spending limits. Vaudt concluded the general fund budget topped the 99 percent limit by about 25 million dollars and overall was up to 400 million out of balance. Culver defended his plan, calling Vaudt's criticisms partisan and noting the budget spends less than in his first year. Vaudt plans to forward the findings to the Iowa Attorney General to decide if revisions are needed.
