The Akers family traveling to Butte stopped for car trouble and had two other children. Services for William John were set for Wednesday at Snider funeral home.
Special to The Gazette reports a roof fire at the Clifford Knight farm home Tuesday morning causing about 400 dollars in damage. Firefighters were called to the scene and stopped the blaze from spreading to adjacent structures. No injuries were reported.
Enid Robinson outlines proposed taxes she says Loveless favors including diverting sales tax revenue and liquor profits to the general fund and ending military service tax exemptions. An 18 year old Cedar Rapids youth Wendell Neubauer pled guilty to drunkenness and was fined $10 in maraceel court Tuesday after police stopped a car with five boys near Fifth Avenue SE. Owner of the car Larry Ralston 17 faced related charges for faulty steering while William Wharton 19 was held on beer purchasing charges.
Clarence Kriz, 33, of 1101 Sixth St. SE, was ordered to serve seven years in Fort Madison state penitentiary after pleading guilty to a false check charge. Five children aged missing overnight near Ocean City in near freezing rain were found safe and cold about a half mile from a search HQ. Military personnel police and volunteers hunted them through the night and provided hot meals before returning them home.

Cedar Rapids Farmers club heard Loren Hickerson urge that industry is Iowa’s salvation to keep its Midwestern leadership. He warned that state problems stem from farming and youth outmigration, with 56 counties shrinking since 1900 and 160000 fewer future jobs by 1965 unless industry grows. He called for government consolidation and a youthful, industry‑driven plan to raise incomes and reduce taxes.
Washington AP report: the House postponed a $14.8 million Civil Rights Commission funding bill after two hours of debate by a vote of 85 to 7. Action was delayed at least two weeks as rights advocates had sought a $750,000 boost for the commission and some lawmakers were away for Lincoln Day events.
Ogal LeRoy Ellison 59 of 2202 Tenth Ave Marion died at 4 a.m. Tuesday after a long illness. Born July 4 1898 in Martelle he married Bertha Ellison June 4 1929 at Mt Vernon. Survived by wife two daughters five sons a sister and a brother. Services at Beatty Bearle’s 1:30 p.m. Friday with burial in Campbell cemetery. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Private graveside services will be held at Oakland Cemetery Manchester at 2 Wednesday, with Rohn Funeral Home in charge.
Services for Mrs Henry Bent Zinger at the Evangelical church in Donnellson will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. E K Schneider. Burial follows at Donnellson. Sub-zero cold hampered firefighters as gas tanks exploded and shredded packing caught fire in a 20 000 square foot two story brick building. Loss estimated over 100000 with contents including 3% loads of bananas. A prior Firestone Tire warehouse and Pepper Bottling fire caused about 110000 in damage.
Joe Stanek of Toddville aged 65 was found dead near his home on route 1 Toddville around 4 30 pm Monday by a neighbor boy Jerry Newman 16 The deputy coroner said death was likely a heart attack Stanek was born in 1893 in Czechoslovakia and came to the United States many years ago His body was taken to Kuba funeral home in Cedar Rapids
Three Riverside teenagers were injured when the car missed a curve on a rural road near Riverside six miles northwest. Ronald Gerot 17 Patricia Gerot 17 and Francis Simon 16 were hospitalized in Iowa City with injuries after the crash into a creek. Simon had a broken wrist and walked for help. Patricia suffered severe facial lacerations. Ronald was thrown from the car and had facial lacerations and a possible frozen foot.

Iowa City professor Wendel Johnson of the University of Iowa speech pathology and audiology department has been elected association editor of the American Speech and Hearing Association. He will assume office in January 1959.
