Roy Mack Dies at 69 Former Athletics Owner

Roy Mack former owner of the Philadelphia Athletics and son of Connie Mack died at 69 from a heart attack in Bryn Mawr Hospital. He and his brother Earle with their father and other Athletics stockholders sold the team to Arnold Johnson of Chicago in 1953, who moved the club to Kansas City.

Nearly half of Cedar Rapids Golden Gloves boxers slept on Civil Defense cots in the Memorial Coliseum armory after a storm stranded more than 50 out of town fighters in Cedar Rapids. Only Cornell College’s four man entry joined 35 Delta Phi Rho brothers in an eight car caravan home to Mt. Vernon after an hour and a half trip.

Cedar Rapids Golden Gloves Open Amid Blizzard Backed by Fans

The Silver Anniversary event saw 74 boxers enter 37 bouts in Cedar Rapids despite a 10 inch blizzard. 19 bouts ended in knockouts or TKOs with 2 defaults. Paid attendance reached 1,139 vs last year's 1,874. Referee Alex Fidler, 25th year guiding the event, oversaw bout No. 16 439.

The Regis Dowling basketball game in Des Moines was postponed for the second straight time. Coach Bob Jennings said Dowling could not make the trip Wednesday, and the game would be postponed indefinitely.
