White House officials said it is highly unlikely the Clinton administration will include a temporary freeze of cost-of-living adjustments for Social Security recipients in its economic plan. Alternatives discussed include raising taxes on Social Security benefits for higher earners and boosting the corporate income tax. Only nine days remain before the State of the Union address.
Cedar Rapids Mayor Larry Serbousek trims his office to a single secretary in a cost saving experiment. Sonya Davis, a 22 year veteran, will move to Streets Commissioner Wayne Murdock’s office. If the plan works, it could save up to $29,485 yearly. Davis plans retirement later this year. PAT MYERS will remain as secretary to Serbousek and Maggie Jensen. Davis notes the office once operated with one secretary, which was insufficient.
Phillip L. Van Amburg, 21, of 1911 Western Ave. SW, was found dead in Prairie Creek on Cedar Rapids southwest side. Preliminary autopsy suggests drowning or hypothermia with no foul play evident. Missing person report filed January 28. Police continue investigation.
