Two Drown as Cars Break Through Ice at Spirit Lake

SPIRIT LAKE AP Two men died and three others nearly perished when two cars broke through the ice on West Okoboji lake. Jerry Thompson 55 of Lake Park and Joe Burley 60 of Hartley perished as rescuers tried to reach the submerged vehicles. Burley Lanz and Peterson all of Hartley escaped before the car sank. Kreisel Walter both of Lake Park escaped after jumping into the water. Investigators warned that warm weather had softened the ice and urged caution. West Okoboji still lists Wayne Swezey 16 of Spencer missing since November when a boat capsized off Eagle Point.

Queen Elizabeth II and Duke Rift Denied by Palace

Cmdr Richard Colville, Buckingham Palace press officer, said rumors of a rift between Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh are untrue. The couple are nearing the end of a four month around the world Britannia tour and will reunite in Lisbon for a Portugal visit.

Eisenhower mediates Israel Egypt quail hunt in Georgia

President Eisenhower at a Georgia hunting retreat kept in touch with U.N. efforts to press Israel to withdraw troops from Egypt. He spoke by long distance with Secretary of State Dulles and then went hunting with his dogs Art and George on the Humphrey plantation.

Escape Time Not Portion of Term Caudill Seeks Credit

LAGRANGE Ky AP Sam Caudill who escaped from the state reformatory here and was at large 13 years would like to count that time as part of his sentence. The state attorney general says he cannot. Caudill is serving life for murder and asked if the 13 years could be counted toward his parole.

Lisbon man killed in Highway 30 crash near Cedar Rapids

Joseph M. Tvrdik a 38 year old Mt Vernon Lisbon delivery driver for Searles Dairy was driving west on Highway 30 when his car struck the rear of a stopped semi near the Cedar River bridge. Tvrdik exited his vehicle and collapsed dying at St Luke's hospital. The chain aid and multiple trucks involved are described by state troopers.

Woman found as 37th victim's daughter may be from Babbs Switch fire

Grace Reynolds of Barstow California a 36 year old dress shop owner said she is certain she is the missing Mary Elizabeth Edens after a reunion with L F Edens and his wife in Hobart Oklahoma. Evidence includes a scar on her foot and matching blood types among Reynolds Edens and two daughters. The Babbs Switch 1924 fire killed 36 and left a long search unresolved.

Newcomb Named Cedar Rapids City Assessor

John J. Newcomb, 46, was appointed Cedar Rapids city assessor to head the office where he has served as deputy for 10 years. He will serve the unexpired term through December 31, 1959 with a $7,000 yearly salary. The appointment, effective immediately, was made by a conference board of city councilmen, school board members and county supervisors from a two-man eligible list.

Boy Killed in Russian Roulette Shooting

In Davenport a 15 year old was charged with first degree murder after police said he shot and killed a companion during a game of Russian roulette. Gene Paul Wellendorf, 17, died from a single .22 caliber shot in the Castel home living room.

Tel Aviv sets for big display protests over Gaza withdrawal

Tel Aviv and other cities saw mass demonstrations as at least a quarter of Tel Aviv's population joined a march demanding Israel withdraw from Gaza and the Gulf of Aqaba only with guarantees. Banners protested surrender to Arab oil and free passage through the Suez Canal. All political parties except the Communist joined the protests.

Falling Tree Limb Knocks Out Power In Southeast C R

A tree limb fell onto high line wires near the Bever park substation, causing a power outage in southeast Cedar Rapids. The incident disrupted 13,800-volt lines from Wilson and Company, affecting areas between Blake boulevard and Mt. Vernon road SE and the Rompot. the sewage plant lost power too. Restoration began about 7:25 PM with most lines back by 8:40 PM and full service by 9:12 PM.

Horthy Dies at 88 in Estoril After Heart Attack

Admiral Nicholas Horthy, 88, former regent of Hungary, died Saturday in Estoril near Lisbon from a heart attack linked to asthma. He led Hungary for 24 years until 1944 abdication, witnessed Nazi takeover and later communist occupation, spending his final years in a modest villa while finishing his memoirs.
