President Eisenhower said the Soviet leadership changes signal internal dissatisfaction but do not alter U.S. policy toward achieving peace. He noted no proof of Soviet hydrogen bomb superiority and discussed Berlin, Formosa, Tachien islands, and a seven billion-dollar school program.
U S Navy AD Skyraider was shot down by communist batteries as civilian evacuees streamed from the Tachens. The pilot Lt. (j g) W J O Heren and two crewmen were rescued with minor injuries. Evacuation continued with 13 900 civilians moved off the islands amid ongoing skirmishes and watchful antipartisan actions.
North Korea on Wednesday identified the Communist planes in Saturday's aerial duel with American Sabre jets as North Korean MIG jets. Two of the Communist planes were shot down, but Pyongyang's Central News Agency made no mention of losses.
REDRUTH England AP Archie Hill 58 loaded his shotgun Tuesday and declared open season on income tax collectors. The tax people claim Hill owes them almost 10000 and have obtained a court order to seize his house. Hill who denies owing the money stood guard with his shotgun in front of a sign reading Income tax Any persons employed by the above entering on this property do so at their own risk. He told reporters They are not going to have my house. The tax people did not say what they will do now.
Cedar Rapids housewives may see a per pound price cut of up to 12 cents on coffee starting Wednesday. A national chain with two Cedar Rapids stores announced a 12 cent cut for its higher grade coffee, with 10 cents off on the lower grade. The change, about five to 10 cents a pound, will spread to most grocers, wholesalers, and retailers soon as stock is replenished. The reduction follows a wholesale price drop from a dollar exchange rate shift between the United States and exporting countries.
A 19 year old Cedar Rapids man Gerald Foster pled guilty to assaulting his sleeping father Edgar Foster 49 causing injuries including three stitches and knocked out teeth. He received a four month suspended sentence. The attack followed an argument over alleged indecent remarks about the son's wife Dorothy 18.
Cedar Rapids officials push for a north south air route with Ozark Airlines backing. Paul J. Rodgers says Ozark is interested if CAB ruling on Braniff Sioux City Chicago is unsettled. If hearings succeed, service could start in 60 to 90 days, otherwise a new application may be filed.
Atlanta report says cyclost erine known as Seromycin shows impressive improvements in severe pulmonary tuberculosis. The antibiotic, a soil mold product like streptomycin, marks an important step toward better treatment of TB.
Voters in the College Community school district south of Cedar Rapids approve a $479,000 bond to build a rural high school. The tally: 522 yes 303 no, 825 ballots. Ely 80 48, College 319 119, Fairfax 123 136. The 40 acre site lies west of the current elementary school.
Melvin Wildt aged 20 charged with slaying Clifton Clauson 32 at the men's reformatory appeared in district court and offered a guilty plea to second degree murder through his attorney Warren Rees. Judge Penningroth set February 16 for a hearing on degree.
Airman Floyd A. James dangled from the wing of a C-124 at 4000 feet in 38 below zero to replace a missing lock pin in the landing gear. Pilot Major Louis W. Baker and crew aided the repair near Wright-Patterson AFB as the plane, from Alaska, continued to Dayton. James suffered only a small head cut.
Negotiating committees of the AFL and CIO agreed to unite their labor union groups into a single federation. The 20 year split would end with ratification by committees, then by AFL and CIO conventions. The AFL executive council will review the amalgamation Thursday.
A bill to allow hard liquor in private clubs, hotels, and railroad cars with beer permits was advanced by the senate judiciary No. 2 committee. It would amend Section 124.31 to exempt select private clubs and controlled railroads from the beer and liquor separation ruling, restoring pre-ruling conditions.
In Moscow Geor gi Malenkov was appointed deputy premier and minister of power stations as part of the new leadership under Premier Bulganin. The supreme Soviet approved the nominations and heard pledges on Formosa, a new five year plan, and peace measures while confirming Molotov’s hard line on U S H bomb development.
New York AP a jury granted Clara Hirsch Levine 350000 in damages after she was struck by a police car in 1953. Levine a 56 year old widow was carried into court on a stretcher and claimed the cruiser traveled nearly 50 miles per hour as she crossed Broadway. Her spinal cord injuries were permanent.
Congress sent to President Eisenhower legislation continuing full GI education benefits for all service members who entered uniform before February 1. Senate passage was by voice vote with no debate, completing congressional action.
